Girls Horses

Girls and Horses at camp

How many horses did Rockbrook have in its horseback riding program this past summer? With all those girls at camp wanting to ride, you might guess we had a lot! Some from St. Andrew's College Equine Business program, some from Sweet Briar College Equine Studies program, and some of Rockbrook's own horses, we had 26 in all.

Halloween Projects

It's almost time for Halloween! And that means it's about time to get busy with a fun Halloween project. There are so many out there. This site lists a few, but our favorite is carving a jackolantern.

Did you know that the word is derived from "Jack of the Lantern," but before that referred to a "strange light flickering in the distance?" Pretty Cool! Read more about the history here.

Also, if you're in the mood to carve one yourself (We know you are!), check out this page with a few patterns.

Hey, send us a photo of your creation! Happy Halloween Everybody!

Overnight Camp Trips

overnight campImagine what it's like eating lunch at over 6000 feet! Here's an overnight camp backpacking group doing just that on Tennent Mountain in the Pisgah National Forest. At 6040 feet high, it's one of the highest mountains in the Northeast! What a great trip.

Camp Songs

There are just too many to count at Rockbrook! At meals, at evening program, around the campfire, at special events like Jug Band, on trips, riding on the bus, even in the shower (!) — we do a lot of singing at camp. Probably the most popular songs at RBC are the ones with hand motions like the "Yogi Bear song," "An Austrian Went Yodeling," and of course the "Coconut Song."

There's also more traditional camp songs. We recorded some of them years ago and posted them to our website. They're online here. Click on over and take a listen!

Here's a favorite to get you started. It's called "Here We Are Together."

Monarch Butterfly Migrations

What has tiny wings and flies more than a thousand miles twice in its lifetime? It's the amazing monarch butterfly. It's true; these butterflies travel south to Mexico and southern California for the winter, only to return in the spring to their northern homes where they can lay their eggs.

Our area of North Carolina is well known as a place to see monarch butterflies on their migration to Mexico. The butterflies fly quite high, but the mountains here have certain areas where they cross and we can see them. Thousands of orange shimmering wings! It's a real treat every fall.

For much more info on monarch butterflies, visit this site.
